Meet Ilana T.

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ilana T.. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Ilana, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

I often describe what I do as “painting my way through trauma recovery.” As a survivor of child abuse and a near-fatal eating disorder, I’ve participated in many different forms of therapy throughout my healing journey. However, I spent years in a constant state of fear and would often “shut down” during traditional talk therapy. What helped me overcome this therapeutic stagnation was art therapy, and with the help of dedicated art therapists, I was finally able to create images that depicted the pain I was experiencing and ultimately find the words to express it.

Since then, I’ve created my personal version of art therapy to do when I’m alone. This is what led me to discover the greater meaning behind every piece of art. Processing traumatic memories in therapy leaves me physically and emotionally drained. During these times, I spend hours pouring my heart and soul into paintings. Each one is filled with emotion.

I do the same thing during times of joy and gratitude. I am abundantly blessed, and daily gratitude has allowed me to recognize and appreciate those blessings. The pieces of art that I sell are the ones that have brought joy, peace, gratitude, love, wholeness, or meaning into my life. My hope is that once another person has one of my creations in their hands, they can find their own heart and soul in the piece.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you? My passion lies in art and the creative process. The styles of work I do are constantly evolving and broadening. Right now, my favorite pieces to work on are resin geodes (image 1). I also do a lot of other work with resin and crystals (jewelry, ashtrays, paperweights, clocks, photo preservation, and abstract art). Other mediums I enjoy working with are gold leaf, texture pastes, crushed glass, dried pressed flowers, and so much more.

I also love doing custom/commission work. One of my favorite items to make are pieces where I write something that the customer requests on the canvas (or whichever surface they choose) and turn it into a piece of art (image 2). These include birthday wishes, New Year’s resolutions, dreams, aspirations, goals, etc. I include inspirational quotes, bible verses, and excerpts from my favorite poems in some of my other paintings too (image 3).

The event I am most proud to be a part of is the annual Love Your Body event by Karen Michelle and Artists for Trauma (images 4 and 5). The LYB events are all about inclusivity and empowering women and girls of all colors, sizes, backgrounds, and abilities. I feel so honored to be able to sell my art there and participate in such an incredible event.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these? The three most important qualities/skills that I believe have brought me to where I am today are determination, trusting the process, and seeking and accepting feedback from others.

It’s no secret that starting your own business is a challenge. As an artist, I am dedicated to creating memorable and meaningful pieces of art. Turning my passion into a business meant learning how to create a website, market, and create content for social media – all of which I had no previous experience with. That was a big learning curve for me, and what helped me overcome it was the determination I had to sell my art. The perspective I adopted was: dealing with the “business side” of things will enable me to spread my art to others.

I’ve had to remind myself to trust the process when navigating unfamiliar territory. For example, as an introvert, going to art shows sounded like a dream come true and a nightmare at the same time. I wanted to show my work, but I also get anxious in big crowds, and I’d much rather be alone in my art studio. Luckily, the first show I went to was a huge success and I enjoyed every moment of it. Now, selling my art in public places is one of my favorite things to do. To me, trusting the process means taking the steps necessary to accomplish something, without being too emotionally attached to the outcome. If I succeed at something I was unsure about, then I know it was well worth it. And if I fail, then I’ve learned a lesson and can choose to try again, armed with the knowledge I’ve gained in the process.

Lastly, I believe that seeking, accepting, and applying feedback from others is crucial to the learning process. However, it is even more important to carefully evaluate whom you are taking feedback from. In her 2019 Netflix special “The Call to Courage,” Brene Brown says, “If you are not in the arena getting your ass kicked on occasion because you were being brave, I am not interested or open to your feedback about my work.” I value and anticipate feedback from people who understand the meaning behind art and the depth behind each piece.

To those who are beginning their small business endeavor, the best advice I can share with you is to have patience, believe in yourself, and enjoy the journey!

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with? Absolutely! Working together with others is something I find very valuable, and I am eager to do more of it. If you have a home or office space that can use some enhancement, I would love to work together with you and create a piece of art that will add beauty to your space. I can also make custom gifts for your loved ones, friends, employees, or coworkers for holidays, birthdays, or any other occasion. I would love to take part in more art-related events, pop-up shops, and galleries and would also be honored to connect with people or organizations who are interested in learning about trauma and healing, as it is an integral part of my work. If you’d like to connect or know of someone who would, you can send me an email at livingartbyilana@gmail.com or fill out the contact form on my website (www.livingartbyilana.com). Karen Michelle: 5 Things You Need To Know To Create A Very Successful Lifestyle Brand

by Authority Magazxine Editorial Staff | December 23, 2021

Be passionate and love what you are building that is key. After that keep evolving and listen to advice. If you make a mistake don’t worry take it as a learning lesson.

As a part of our series called “5 Things You Need To Know To Create A Very Successful Lifestyle Brand”, I had the pleasure of interviewing Karen Michelle.

Karen Michelle is a fashion designer and entrepreneur who created the KAREN MICHELLE LIFESTYLE BRAND. The brand’s anchor product is the well-known, made in the USA, Destiny Candle by Karen Michelle, a 100% massage oil candle that turns into a warm body lotion with surprise jewelry inside. Her candle has been featured on such shows as The Ellen Show, The Talk, and The Wendy Williams Show. Under the Karen Michelle brand, she launched LYB Events (LOVE YOUR BODY) which is a fashion show and red carpet that focuses on body positivity and inclusivity featuring models of all shapes, sizes, disabilities and ages.

Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series! Before we dive in, our readers would love to learn a bit more about you. Can you tell us a bit about your “childhood backstory”?

Thank you. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, and I love it here. I am from a family of hard workers and have always felt a responsibility to work.

Can you tell us the story of what led you to this particular career path?

I was 20 years old when I opened my first retail store and because I enjoy people and the daily interaction it was a great lifestyle for me. In 2011, I moved into the fashion and event world again enjoying the same everyday routine. I started the Karen Michelle Lifestyle Brand in 2011

Is there a particular book, podcast, or film that made a significant impact on you? Can you share a story or explain why it resonated with you so much?

Self help books are great. Not everything you read may be relevant to you, but sentence might be an epiphany. For example, I love Suze Orman’s book which made it clear to have one year’s expenses in a savings account for a rainy day. This came in handy in 2020!

Can you please give us your favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share how that was relevant to you in your life?

My favorite quote is by Helen Keller which says, “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or touched, just felt in the heart. To me this means that you must love your family, friends, and your life with an open heart and this also includes your career path.

Ok, thank you for that. Let’s now jump to the primary focus of our interview. For the benefit of our readers, let’s define our terms. How do you define a Lifestyle Brand? How is a Lifestyle Brand different from a normal, typical brand? What are the benefits of creating a lifestyle brand?

The Karen Michelle Lifestyle brand to me is mixing heart and attitude with the product brands you are promoting. So, for example when promoting LYB Events we are not just promoting the actual event but the purpose for the event. The purpose of LYB is to empower women and girls in life and business which is something I believe in. The benefits of creating a lifestyle brand is that there will always be something in your brand that will resonate with people.

In your opinion, what is an example of a company that has done a fantastic job building a believable and beloved Lifestyle Brand? What specifically impresses you? What can one do to replicate that?

In my opinion, the brand Artists for Trauma is a good example of a lifestyle brand, although it is a non-profit it helps people in all aspects of their life. Led by the phenomenal woman, Laura Sharpe, this brand gives back to the community and is constantly adapting to the ever-changing times.

Can you share your ideas about how to create a lifestyle brand that people really love and are ‘crazy about’?

I think you need to create a brand filled with things that you love and make sure it is inclusive. When you do that you will have a brand that will speak to everyone.

What are the common mistakes you have seen people make when they start a lifestyle brand? What can be done to avoid those errors?

A common mistake people make when starting a lifestyle brand is that they get upset when everyone doesn’t like or agree with their choices. It is important to remember that not everyone is going to be as passionate about your brand as you are, but don’t let that get you down.

Let’s imagine that someone reading this interview has an idea for a lifestyle brand that they would like to develop. What are the first few steps that you would recommend that they take?

Be passionate and love what you are building that is key. After that keep evolving and listen to advice. If you make a mistake don’t worry take it as a learning lesson.

Ok. Thank you for all that. Here is the main question of our discussion. What are your “5 Things You Need To Know To Create A Very Successful Lifestyle Brand” and why? (Please share a story or example for each.)

*Have the BEST TEAM around you! I could not have done so much without my team of support

The last LYB Fashion and Shopping Event October 2021 was a huge success because of the Karen Michelle Team.

*Know your brand inside and out. For the shows, candle line, and fashion pieces we manufacture be ready to answer questions, live by using those products, and create an attitude that shows it. Most of all be sincere.

*Make the best products. Our candles are natural and manufactured here in the USA which is very important to me. Our clothing line of our famous Black Pencil Skirt is also made in the USA.

*Be open to partnerships. I have created an extremely close partnership with Laura Sharpe CEO of Artists for Trauma “AFT”. It expanded LYB to include AFT models in all our shows.

*Stay in touch with your followers. By email, Instagram, and even phone calls. Keep your connections strong. Don’t forget to do good for all communities. We had huge mask donations during the peak of Covid and even again this month. Remember we are all in this together.

Super. We are nearly done. Here are our final questions. You are an inspiration to a great many people. If you could inspire a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger.

The movement is Love Your Body “LYB” by Karen Michelle! Love who you are inside and out. I would love the movement to be able to reach out to young girls who are struggling with loving themselves and to empower each other in a larger group even more.

We are very blessed that some of the biggest names in Business, VC funding, Sports, and Entertainment read this column. Is there a person in the world, or in the US, with whom you would love to have a private breakfast or lunch, and why? He or she might just see this if we tag them.

Two people who I have admired over the years are Suze Orman and Magic Johnson. I have used both of their advice over the years. Suze had business struggles and overcame them and focused on achievement. Magic Johnson gives to his community and adjusts his business needs with the changing times.

Thank you for these fantastic insights. We greatly appreciate the time you spent on this.

The Love Your Body Event, Hosted by Karen Michelle, Supports Artists for Trauma

By Daniella Platt, Producer/host of Looking Good with Daniella & T. Coffee, Creator of Merch & Apparel for Anyone

August 2021

Walking a runway is empowering. On a mission world, with more than 1000 people at the Luxe Hotel on to uplift and support women, renowned Los Angeles retailer and founder of Destiny Candle Karen Michelle launched the Love Your Body event in 2015. At the red carpet runway event, women of all shapes and sizes get to take the stage and be their best, most confident selves.

“I felt I needed a mission to empower women and girls to get all they want, dream all they want and to be able to feel good about themselves,” said Michelle. “I truly believe that women and girls — and myself — need a support system.”

The day attracts press and influencers from around the world, with more than 1000 people at the Luxe Hotel on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, California to support the message of female empowerment. Michelle said that this year, “Guest celebrity singer Ketch, one of the Golden Buzzer winners on America’s Got Talent, will be joining the event,” in addition to some other surprises.

The Love Your Body runway show will take place this October, and proceeds will support event partner Artists for Trauma and other organizations of strength.

We caught up with some vendors and sponsors of the event to hear their personal stories and get a sneak peek at what’s to come this fall.

Laura Sharpe, founder of Artists for Trauma
Laura’s journey to serving and supporting trauma survivors began after she was in an explosive helicopter crash with her family in 2008. She’s blessed to be one of the survivors, after three lives were lost that day.
“The greatest superpower is collaboration. We know that none of us get anywhere alone. Through Artists for Trauma, [with] artists local and internationally, we cre- ate healing,” said Sharpe. “We empower trauma survivors through all the art disciplines of photography, film, sculpture, dance, music and mindfulness.”

Tara Joseph, founder of 3rd Eye Hi
3rd Eye Hi is a subscription box company for women in the health, wellness, fitness, lifestyle and beauty fields. Based in Nashville, the box features a curated mix of products from CBD to make users feel good to remedies for anxiety and roseacea.

Why is female empowerment important to you?
The foundation of our company is to bring women together and make them feel like they’re a part of something larger. We want women to feel like they can build each other up rather than tear each other down.

You were in the fashion business before 3rd Eye Hi. What inspired the transition?
I was in the fashion industry and modeled for years. There’s a stigma that goes along with that industry. [The transition] was about raising my girls to have confidence and be successful in any way.

Tell us something unique about 3rd Eye Hi.
Our tagline is “join our clique,” because a clique has a terrible connotation. We want all women to feel like they were part of our clique to turn the connotation upside down.

Penny Crook, designer, Deneault Bags
On a mission to create beautiful vintage bags with superior quality that are made in the U.S., the handbags and crossbody bags are designed to look even better when they age.

What inspired you to create Deneault’s unique bags?
I lost my dad in 2019. As I was helping my mom clean out her closets, we came across this very unique purse that my dad had given her over 50 years ago. It was timeless, fashion forward, but yet almost 60 years old. My parents’ marriage of 66 years carried over into the brand, a nod to remind people that this product is going to last as long if not longer.

What does the Love Your Body event mean to you?
My brand is all about love, family and loving yourself.

Deb Berman, skin care expert, Rodan & Fields
Rodman & Fields was founded by two dermatologists determined to give users the best skin of their lives and to boost their confidence.

How does skincare empower you and change your life?
Rodan and Fields believes that your face is your calling card. If you don’t have good skin, sometimes you don’t have confidence or feel deserving. Products that show visible results can make a huge difference in someone’s life, whether they’re a teen suffering from acne or at my age with concerns like fine lines and wrinkles.

Divorce was an awakening for you. What inspired you to be part of the Love Your Body event?
I was married for 38 years. My husband decided he was really not comfortable in our marriage anymore. We divorced. The little girl in me wasn’t afraid to stand up — where had she gone? Over time, I morphed into being someone who did not have confidence and did not feel empowered. I took that leap of faith to believe in myself. I did my first event with Karen Michelle and have not looked back since. The event is a touch of gold!

Emma Vida Ordoñez, owner, Valley Girl Beauty
Ordoñez manages the looks of the 200-plus models at the Love Your Body show, and she is the managing editor for CIE Fashion Magazine.

You work with foster care youth and many Los Angeles-based charities. Can you tell us about that?
I’m involved with Casa LA, [who throws] a yearly prom called Glamor Gowns for Foster Kids. I work with Worthy of Love, which helps homeless children have birthday parties and Chloe Cares in downtown Los Angeles which sets up refrigerators with food for the homeless. I also help to set up water systems for people in Africa. On top of that, I have a team of new makeup artists from the foster system, single mothers or new artists that I guide and help to continue classes and receive assistance after they leave the foster program. We provide makeup and hairstyling kits so they can make a living after being out of the system at age 18.

How do you do it all?
It’s amazing seeing all these people working together towards one common goal: to make everyone feel fabulous. I take it one day at a time. I prioritize and touch base with everybody every day. I love being spread thin.

Sahar Allure, owner, Sahar Allure Med Spa
This Los Angeles-focused spa offers a wide array of services to help men and women look good, feel good and act better.

As a successful woman entrepreneur, why is support- ing women in business important to you?
Beauty brings security and confidence. I started as a cardiac nurse, and I didn’t feel that satisfaction. When I started doing aesthetic nursing, I found out how people feel. They have insecurities because of a scar or a line. Once you take up these lines and you change the way they look, the whole personality, attitude and outlook changes.

Tell us about your newly opened Med Spa.
I’m a foreigner — I tell everybody, if I can do it then you can do it. I provide services for women and guys, a one-stop shop for lashes, massages, IV hydration, body sculpting, laser, botox, fillers and consultations for plastic surgery in one place.

Karen Michelle Fashion Brand Teams Up With Nonprofits to Make Affordable Masks

by Karen Michelle Halaszi | April 29, 2020

As the owner of Karen Michelle, a lifestyle and fashion brand based in Los Angeles, I’ve added manufacturing masks for those in need during the pandemic to my business.

We joined up with Artists for Trauma, a nonprofit that pairs trauma survivors with artists, activewear brand Modefywear, cosmetic brand Planet Thankful and many volunteers to manufacture and distribute washable masks.

“We joined up with Artists for Trauma, a nonprofit that pairs trauma survivors with artists … and many volunteers to manufacture and distribute washable masks.”

We are charging $3.50 per mask, which we make right here in Los Angeles. This has become a large undertaking and is being done at cost — not for profit. Getting masks to those who need [them] is truly a group effort and I am proud to work with these generous and talented people. We are working together to do something for everyone in the community.

Karen Michelle Boutique Hosts another Successful ‘LYB’ Event

- APRIL 10, 2019 -

Karen Michelle Boutique found a positive way to ring in the spring last Sunday with a “LYB” event at the Luxe Hotel on Sunset.

The event brought women and girls of all ages to walk the red carpet, ob- serve two runway shows featuring looks from over 20 designers, and partake in shopping from more than 50 vendors, followed by a delicious dessert reception. Karen Michelle’s event sent social media into a frenzy with hundreds of attendees hashtagging the event throughout the afternoon.

There were 150 models of all age groups participating, showing off some 200 styles, with each look appearing more stunning than the next. The first runway show was wrapped up with a finale of breathtaking bridal wear by Jinza Bridal, while the final show featured exquisite formalwear from Miri Couture.

Laura T. Sharpe, CEO of Artists for Trauma, was presented with the Karen Michelle Heart Award, which is given to a person or organization that exemplifies the desire to “make the community and world we live in a better place for all.”

Fashion/Event: Karen Michelle’s “LYB” Event

After attending this fun event, my friend, Denise, and I didn’t understand why it was titled “Love Your Body,” but it didn’t matter—we loved everything there except our bodies! We and the other zillion guests enjoyed it all.

The whole day was jam-packed with activities! We didn’t know what to do first! It was held at the Luxe Hotel on Sunset in Brentwood. I hadn’t been to that lovely venue in years, so it was interesting from the get-go. Since Karen Michelle owns her own clothing and jewelry boutique in town, she created her event as basically a shopping one, but there were a lot of other aspects to it, which I’ll get to in a minute. She did a wonderful job organizing the whole thing. I have no idea where she found the time because it was a gargantuan effort! [Note: By the way, Karen Michelle and I were not the only two “Karen”s there—there were several others working the event! I loved being part of such a popular group!

The display tables were all in one giant room, which was buzzing all day. The DJ in there was playing the music way too loud, so it was a bit difficult for Denise and me to shop because we couldn’t hear what the vendors were telling us about their wares, but the visuals helped us choose some worthy purchases. Denise went gaga over a bracelet she choose, which was made from spare car parts! That shopping room was surrounded by a big garden area which had many built-in couches and dining tables; perfect for mingling and discussing the happening event.

There were also not one, but two fashion shows. It was very crowded up there, so we didn’t see much, but the models came down the aisle near us, so we still got glimpses of many of the ensembles. It looked like the models themselves were all ages and sizes, which probably explains the “Love Your Body” moniker. The kids, especially, seemed thrilled to be participating. It reminded me a bit of my teenage modeling days. Although my decades-long modeling career covered just about every style, (runway, fashion illustration, photography, and even hand,) strolling the catwalk was always my favorite, especially when we got to dance, (as opposed to just strut.) So I was happy for them all to be having that fun experience.

Both of our favorite part of the day was getting long glue-on nails! And they were both stiletto style, which neither of us had done before. (Denise cut hers down as soon as she got home, which she said was very easy to do, but I’m still rocking mine full-length, which explains why there might be some typos in here! How do people get anything done with such talons?! Outside of looking glamorous, of course.) Denise had Sexy Boss Babe nails applied by Arzo Yusuf, my fellow UCLA attendee and the founder of this “social value” company. Some of the proceeds of her sales go to help kids in foster care, and fight against human trafficking. Good for her! And the nails were so easy to apply that we each took home a pair of red ones, to do for ourselves down the line.

And then I had mine done by two absolutely adorable and fashionable sisters. Laura Varela, who owns the company, Nail Charmed, worked on me, with an assist from her younger sis, Yerlin, while we chatted and laughed. Theirs is the relationship we should all have with our siblings! (And my nails now look great, too!) In between it all, they had light snacks available to buy, and there were big jugs of water and iced tea available at all times, which I especially appreciated on that uber-hot day. It was really comforting to know that it was always there. We had to leave before the raffle winners were announced, with the place still abuzz. But we’re already planning on returning next year. Now that you know what this event is like, I hope to see you there, too.

"LYB with Karen Michelle"

I was asked to speak at Love Your Body day with Karen Michelle LA on Sunday at the LUXE Sunset BLVD Hotel! Karen Michelle is a super cool boutique in Los Angeles that caters to all sizes, so you can pretty much walk in that store and know you’re going to be able to find something that makes you look and feel fabulous. Since I take social media off on Sunday, I wasn’t on my phone the whole day, which was refreshing because I was feeling like I needed a break. I have times where I feel like I can easily sit on my phone for hours a day, and on other days, I get overwhelmed and stressed with my phone. It’s an interesting feeling to be working and not posting tons of live content, because that’s what I’m so used to doing during the week. I had to remind myself yesterday that being off of my phone doesn’t mean that I’m not still actively doing something: I’m just living in the moment!

I was one of three speakers for the event, and I was in great company! Shea Vaughn, who is Vince Vaughn’s mom, spoke prior to me, and an inspiring eating recovery specialist spoke after me. I don’t always get to speak to my target demographic (which is primarily parents and young adults) so I was thrilled to finally speak to an audience that can relate to what I speak on. Each speaker was only given 3-4 minutes to speak, so I briefly touched on my nonprofit, M.I.N.T., and the concept behind my blog. Many people don’t know that I come from a small, sheltered town in Eastern, CT, and I initially wanted to be a model because I thought that was the only way I’d be successful. Once I stopped modeling at age 16, and decided to pursue my blog (because I didn’t know what else I’d do) I found myself recovering from my body image issues, and truly finding peace with myself and my mission to inspire teens across the globe. The moral of that story is that you may follow your dreams and end up going in a different direction that will lead you to your ultimate destiny. Life is all about experimenting and finding your true passion.

"Honored to have co-hosted the LYB Event!"

I had the distinct honor of co-hosting the lovely and amazing “Karen Michelle’s 6th Annual Love Your Body Fashion Show and Shopping Event this Sunday, November 4th at the super swanky Luxe Sunset Blvd Hotel at 11461 Sunset Boulevard in fancy schmancy Brentwood with Karen herself.

LYB Events is all about body positivity and after years of being in fields where I’m on-camera and appearance is everything, it’s so refreshing to be a part of an event like this.

Karen Michelle is a noted fashion designer and retailer on fashionable Robertson Boulevard in Los Angeles that caters to women and girls of all sizes and shapes. She felt the desire to enable women and girls of all sizes and shapes to feel beautiful inside and out and decided what better way than to let them all walk a runway. She came up with the concept of her “Love Your Body” event 6 years ago and went out on a mission to make her dream event and fashion show into a reality.Over the years, Karen has grown her “LYB” event from 100 attendees to well over 1000 with countless celebrities in attendance walking her red carpet and even making appearances in her runway shows.

Karen chooses a very special charity to involve for each and every event. Karen takes great pride in being able to give back to the community and continues to do so in her own whimsical and eclectic fashion creations catering to modern, modest women and girls around the world. She also has a popular line called Destiny Candle by Karen Michelle that she created that has been featured on the Ellen Show, The Hallmark Channel and many other media outlets.
