Hidden Gems: Meet Karen Michelle

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Michelle.

Hi Karen, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born and raised in Los Angeles and I love it here. I am from a family of hard workers and have always felt a responsibility to work.

I was 20 years old when I opened my first retail store and because I enjoy people and the daily interaction, it was a great lifestyle for me. In 2011, I moved into the fashion and event world again enjoying the same everyday routine. I started the Karen Michelle Lifestyle Brand in 2011 and the Annual LYB All Inclusive Fashion and Shopping Event. Which includes a partnership with the non-profit Artists For Trauma and we together empower women and girls in life and business.

Destiny Candle by Karen Michelle is my passion too! It is a 100% Massage Oil Candle made in the USA and that is one facet of our brand that is so important to me. It is my creative side.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Sometimes roads are bumpy and we need to stay strong take things as a learning lesson. Some of the struggles have been if an idea I had didn’t work out in business or for example, I was a single mom raising my son and sometimes I felt I didn’t create enough of a work/home balance. With this being said, I still feel I did a good job overall because my heart and soul are in all I do.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The Karen Michelle Lifestyle brand to me is mixing heart and attitude with the products and the LYB Event that are or brand.

So example when promoting LYB Events, we are not just promoting the actual event but the purpose for the event. The purpose of LYB is to empower women and girls in life and business which is something I believe in.

Mother's Day Gift Guide 2019 by Karen Salkin

People always ask me why I don’t do a Mother’s Day Gift Guide every year. The answer is that I would love to do it that often, but I don’t always find enough items that I feel will make fabulous gifts. So, happily, this year I discovered several of them!

There’s something on this list for every kind of mother. And for all other females, as well. (I only wish I had ever received any kind of “Auntie” gift from one of my nieces and nephews, blood-related or not.)

I want to thank my trusty Review Panel for their hard (but fun) work in going through very many products so that we can recommend only the most worthwhile ones to my cherished readers.

So whether you give these as Mother’s Day gifts next week, (yes, it’s upon us that soon,) or for any other occasion, or are just treating yourself, (which we should always do,) I’m confident that everyone will be happy with any one, or all, of these choices. I’m happy to say that they cover a whole plethora of categories.

And perhaps best of all, we INAM ladies recently ordered all of them for ourselves, and they got here pretty quickly. (But don’t sleep on them, Mother’s Day is next week-end already!)

I’ve seen many of their presentations and have never been disappointed. I’m always amazed at how these people come up with different and creative ways to constantly entertain us. Gerard Cosmetics Glitter Lipsticks ”One of my favorite gift suggestions of the past few years, for all occasions, is the assorted lipsticks from this fun cosmetics company. My friends and I all love every iteration of lip adornment they’ve offered through the years, but I almost passed-out from excitement when I recently discovered their new Glitter Lipstick! Talk about having luscious lips! My Review Panel and I tried all six of the shiny colors, and we agreed that any one of them would make a great gift! But we voted the gold-tinged “Hollywood Blvd.” and the rich red “Cupid” to be our faves. (Don’t let the “Glitter” moniker scare you” ”they’re not crazy sparkly. But these lipsticks make your lips so shiny that you do not need a gloss!) MariBelle Confections “A business associate who used to always send me weird gifts, (one of them was a faux fur blanket that Mr. X and I both thought was a dead raccoon when we opened the box and screamed,) finally sent me the famous stunningly-adorned MariBelle chocolates from New York. They are so gorgeous, luxurious, and delicious that I said he never had to to send me another gift ever again! And guess what? He never did!!! But that was fine; these chocolates are that good. I recommend any one of their confections at any time, but for this particular occasion, I suggest something in their special lovely pink boxes, and their Mother’s Day Vintage Ganache Cake, the description of which sounds like it’s a slice of chocolate heaven! Karen Michelle’s Destiny Candles ”Someone once gave me one of these wonderful candles and I adored it! I doubt there’s anyone who doesn’t love a good candle. And these Karen Michelle ones have so many extras to recommend them. First of all, they come in an array of yummy fragrances. I love the Fresh Rain the most, because it evokes romance. And my Panel members say that the combo Strawberry and Champagne one is especially delicious; even the name is sumptuous. Secondly, when you melt them, the skin-conditioning ingredients, (coconut, soy, apricot, aloe vera, vitamin E, shea butter, and jojoba oil) turn into massage oil! (So an extra Mother’s Day gift would be to give her a massage, too!) Sexy Boss Babe Nails ”Even though everything else about my looks is totally real, I recently began rocking fake nails, and I’m here to tell you how fun they’ve been! And comfortable, too, which I was surprised to discover. And if you deem the ones from this company to be too long, or in some cases pointy, for you or your giftee, they’re very easy to file down, while still keeping the attractiveness. A file and glue even come in each package, along with two dozen nails in twelve sizes! The Panel tried-out several colors, which we had such fun doing, and we deemed the red “Fearless” and the aptly-named “Shine Bright” to be the sexiest. Best of all, though, is that not only does this company have very affordable colors/designs for every taste, but they have a charity component, as well. One hundred percent of the proceeds of one of my favorite colors of theirs, a holographic light blue, with the luxurious “Like A Diamond,” goes to charities that support foster youth and survivors of human trafficking. They chose that hue because light blue is the national awareness color for foster care, and blue, in general, is the national awareness color for human trafficking. Cailyn Gen Lux Eyebrow Gel ”I’ve long been a fan of this cosmetics company’s products, so I was thrilled when I discovered that they’re also in the brow game. My Review Panel and I tried out four colors, and found that there is truly something for everyone! It very conveniently comes in eight shades. Nutmeg and Cocoa seemed to fit most of us on the Panel, with the more dramatic among us voting for Mahogany. And we all loved the ease of the built-in brush. Double Dare Spa Masks ”My entire Review Panel went nuts over this company’s OMG Red + Snail Masks. We all actually uttered, “OMG!,” when we took them out of their packages! They’re made of some special material that adheres to your face better than the rest of the masks we’ve tried, so nothing drips down when you have it on. And they come out of the package pretty chilled, so you don’t even have to refrigerate them. (Maybe it’s the snail secretion ingredient in them; those little critters must be cold-blooded!) And to hold your hair back when you’re using the mask, (which is so important, isn’t it my fellow long-tressed beauties?,) use their adorbs oversized terrycloth OMG Mega Hair Band, which comes in several bright colors. (Here’s a fun tip: You can get these two items in a set, so it’s an even nicer, more visually-enticing gift.) Chietowa Tokyo Crane Card Case ”You can’t go wrong with any item from this purse company out of Japan, but I especially admire their card case, the one adorned with cranes. That symbolic design, of a flying crane, (which is the national bird of Japan,) is considered to be a lucky charm. (And who among us doesn’t need that?) Toddlecraft Baby Book ”With so many of my gal pals getting married and having kids these days, I thought I’d include a little something-something for all the new moms, and moms-to-be, out there. This year, Karen Michelle knocked it out of the park with her 6th Annual Love Your Body Event!

The fabulous ballroom of the Luxe Sunset Blvd Hotel in Los Angeles came to life with over 1000 attendees. The venue was buzzing with a fabulous array of vendors and enthusiastic shoppers all waiting for the Grand Red Carpet. Kiana Lyz Rivera - 2019 Miss San Diego Plus America spearheaded the LYB Event Social Media Takeover on Instagram posting live feed and stories, interviewing models, celebrity arrivals, vendors, designers and guest throughout the event and the fabulous Melody Trice of the Melody Trice Show ran all Red Carpet interviews, streaming live onto the LYB Events Facebook Page.

The finale runway fashion show hosted over 136 models ranged from ages 3 - 67 all sizes, shapes and ethnicities, wearing clothing from over 14 new designers and two amazing charities attached, Safe Passages & Artists for Trauma. If you work intensely for an extended amount of time, you know how good it feels to get a massage and have all those knots in your muscles rubbed out.


So when KM Fantasy sent me a massage oil candle to test and review, I was both intrigued and delighted - a massage was now mandatory!


I have used massage oils before, but not in the form of a candle. This little gift had come just in time too. I have been doing and intense workout program for the last eight weeks and I was in great need of having my muscles given a good rub down.


It had also been a very busy and stressful few weeks and I needed a little fun and adventure, so I decided my extended weekend trip to the beach would be the perfect opportunity to test this candle.


The night we arrived, I opened the candle and inhaled the scent deeply - mmmmm, chocolate mint! I could feel myself relaxing already. Now, to receive a proper massage, you have to set the mood. With lights low, we lit the candle. It smelled great! I was already feeling more relaxed.


Following directions, we let the candle burn for approximately 20 minutes, and then snuffed the wick. My boyfriend poured the oil on my back and began massaging it into the skin. Oh. My. Heaven. This candle is great! The oil was warm and soothing and the aroma of chocolate mint was relaxing. I could feel the knots melting out of my muscles. Afterwards, my skin felt soft and silky smooth. This candle is now going to be my go-to oil treatment for all my massages.

The candle burns nicely and the wax melts pretty quickly and at a very low temperature. You do have to be careful when dipping the oil on the skin because if you get the oil that's closest to the candlewick you pick up a little burnt smell when you rub it in your skin.

When offered the opportunity to review the KM Fantasy Massage Oil Candle you could say I was pretty excited. I love to try out new products and the massage oil candle is something I have never tried before. Since I know that I love massages and the scent of a good smelling candle, I knew this would be a product that I would not only want to try, but likely something I would use again and again.


I received the Arousing Mint Chocolat Candle from the online retailer KM Fantasy. Upon opening the tin I smelled the sweet aroma of mint chocolat. The scent is so delicious I considered tasting the candle, but my good sense kicked in and I decided this might not be a good idea.


Hubby lit the candle. The directions say to allow the candle to burn two to three hours before use, but I was impatient. We waited about 30 minutes. The yummy scent of the candle filled the room. I was laying face down on the bed. I put a towel under me just in case some of the oil escaped my body.


Hubby first poured some of the hot oil into his hands making sure it wouldn't be too hot for my delicate skin. He rub his hands together and then on me.


Only a small amount of hot oil was necessary for a nice massage. It spread nicely on my back and wasn't sticky at all. Next he pour the hot oil directly on my back. It felt warm and quite soothing. At no point was the candle ever too hot for me.


After the massage hubby went to wash the oil from his hands. He said it came of quite easily with soap and water. I chose to leave the oil on my skin for the night. The next morning I woke up with silky soft skin and the wonderful aroma of mint chocolat in the air.

KM Fantasy's Massage Oil Candles

KM Fantasy has only recently launched their product line as of this past January. I'm so excited to be able to share a little about their fantastic line of quality massage oil candles with you!


I was sent two five ounce candles in the Luscious Lemon Souffle, and the Arousing Chocolat Mint scents. Lemon is one of my absolute favorite scents and I practically squealed when I heard they made their massage candles with in Lemon Souffle. I so wish I could share scents through the computer, because oh my goodness do they smell amazing! Very true to their names and good enough to eat! There is also a Coconut scent available, though I wasn't able to sample that (too bad, because I know I've said it here plenty of times, I adore the scent of coconut!). I love that these scents are more of dessert treats than the flowery perfume scents that you often find with massage oils and candles.


They each came packaged in beautiful little drawstring bags, and are perfect to give as gifts, or to purchase for an evening of romance and pampering for yourself and someone special. The tins are gorgeous and they're so easy to open, and close securely.


To use these candles, simply light them and enjoy the fragance for about twenty minutes. Once a nice pool of oil has melted, you can then blow out the candle, and pour the oil into your hands or directly onto the body and massage the warm, scented oil in to the skin. The warmth, the scent, and the massage together are incredibly relaxing. They are specifically formulated to melt at a low temperature so that they don't burn your skin.


These candles are made in the USA, with top quality ingredients. They are listed as 100% natural. I have to admit I was skeptical about that, because really, not so many products can say that these days. I was pleasantly surprised when I turned over a tin to read the ingredient list to find that the list was short and simple! Coconut wax/oil, soy wax/oil, apricot wax/oil, caprylic/capric, aloe vera oil, vitamin e oil, shea butter, and jojoba oil. That's it! Quality, indeed! The only thing I didn't immediately recognize was caprylic, which turns out is just a fatty acid present in oils, used in many perfumes. If you know more about that ingredient, let me know! I'd love a comment with a more detailed explanation.

Stars such as Morgan Freeman, Glenn Close, Tina Fey, and Viola Davis are just a few. I'm sure they enjoyed them just as much as I have! I've seen on Twitter that Charlie Sheen quite enjoys these as well!


I have had these candles for a little over two months now, and used both multiple times. They're still going strong...and I have to admit I've lit these a time or two without massages in mind just because they smell SO amazingly delicious! I don't normally like candles or body products that smell like chocolate, but I've really enjoyed the Mint Chocolat. Now, if only it didn't give me a craving for Thin Mints, hehe!

Over the past weekend I attended BeautyCon here in Los Angeles with my friend Becky. While walking through the different vendors at the location of Siren Studios, we came across a table that I had to stop at. Not only does this candle fill my living room, hallway and bathroom with a beautiful fragrance the scent lasts about 6 hours on my skin. I tried using this candle after I let it burn for about 30 minutes and using the oil but it was a little to loose for me and I didn't want to spill a single drop. I let it cool for about 15 minutes and used it while it was creamy and BAM my skin was in bliss.
